Description

Hemileuca is a genus of moths belonging to the family Saturniidae. Within the agricultural and forestry sectors, they are recognized as pests due to the larvae (caterpillars), which can consume large amounts of foliage from various host plants, leading to significant defoliation.

Taxonomically, these insects are classified under the order Lepidoptera. Their biological success as a pest is supported by a strategy of gregarious feeding during early larval stages, which allows them to effectively overwhelm the defensive mechanisms of their host trees.
