Description

The sheep moth (Hemileuca eglanterina) is a prominent member of the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. While primarily known in North America, this species is recognized for the feeding behavior of its larvae, which can pose significant challenges to various garden shrubs and small trees.

The larvae are specialized feeders on plants within the Rosaceae family. Their primary host plants include various species of roses (Rosa spp.), wild brambles, and wild rose (Rosa nutkana). Additionally, they are known to feed on cherry, apple, and almond trees, potentially affecting fruit production and plant vigor in localized infestations.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning one generation occurs per year. Females deposit clusters of eggs on the stems of host plants in late summer. These eggs remain dormant through the winter. As spring arrives, larvae hatch and begin feeding gregariously. This social behavior is most pronounced during the early instars, making the colonies easy to spot.

Larval feeding causes defoliation, which can range from minor leaf scarring to complete stripping of the foliage. Heavy defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to stunted growth or increased susceptibility to secondary infections. Growers should note that the mature larvae are covered with spiny tubercles that can cause skin irritation upon contact.

Effective management strategies focus on early detection and physical removal of egg masses during the winter pruning process. In cases of significant infestation, biological control agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are highly recommended, as they specifically target the caterpillars while preserving beneficial pollinators and natural predators in the garden ecosystem.
