The Nevada buck moth (Hemileuca nevadensis) is a member of the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. Native to North America, this species is closely associated with specific riparian and forest ecosystems. While adult moths are often observed for their coloration, the larval stage is the primary concern for arborists and forest managers due to their potential for large-scale defoliation.
This pest primarily targets trees within the Salicaceae family. The most common host plants include various species of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus). Host selection is highly specific, and trees under environmental stress are particularly susceptible to severe infestations, which can lead to reduced growth rates and overall decline of the affected plantation.
The life cycle of Hemileuca nevadensis typically involves a single generation per year. The species overwinters in the egg stage, which are laid in clusters on the host tree's twigs. Upon hatching in the spring, larvae begin feeding gregariously.
