Range caterpillar

The range caterpillar (Hemileuca oliviae) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Saturniidae. It is primarily known for causing extensive damage to rangelands and grasslands across the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where it can reach outbreak levels periodically.

The larvae, or caterpillars, feed almost exclusively on various species of rangeland grasses. They show a particular preference for blue grama grass, which is a vital forage component. When larval populations are high, they can devastate vast areas of pasture, leaving behind only the stems and causing severe losses for livestock producers.

The life cycle of the range caterpillar is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. Eggs are laid in clusters around plant stems in the fall and remain dormant throughout the winter. Upon hatching in the spring, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding gregariously. Eventually, they descend into the soil to pupate before emerging as adult moths.

The economic damage caused by this pest is profound. Beyond the immediate loss of forage, the defoliation of grasses can reduce the overall health and vigor of the pasture, leading to a long-term decrease in biomass production. Additionally, the caterpillars possess stinging hairs, which can cause painful skin irritation to grazing livestock, further complicating management.
