Description
Systematic position: The Philippine potato ladybird (Henosepilachna philippinensis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. Unlike the majority of ladybirds known for their predatory habits, this specific genus consists of phytophagous insects that feed exclusively on plant tissues, causing economic damage to crops.
Host crops: This pest primarily targets members of the Solanaceae family. Its main host plants include potatoes, eggplants, and tomatoes. The insect is particularly problematic in tropical and subtropical regions, where it can maintain continuous populations on cultivated fields throughout the year.
Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. The larvae are voracious feeders and pass through several instars before pupating on the host plant. The lifecycle is highly dependent on temperature, with warmer conditions accelerating development rates significantly.
Nature of damage: Both adult beetles and larvae contribute to crop damage. They practice leaf skeletonization, feeding on the parenchyma tissue while avoiding the larger veins. This feeding behavior significantly reduces the photosynthetic area of the leaves, leading to stunted plant growth, reduced fruit production, and, in severe cases, the total loss of the foliage.
