Systematic position: The spotted potato ladybird, scientifically known as Henosepilachna sparsa, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. While the majority of ladybirds are predatory and beneficial, this specific genus has evolved into a phytophagous pest, feeding exclusively on plant tissues, which classifies it as an agricultural nuisance.
Host plants: The primary targets for this pest are members of the Solanaceae family. Potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are the most frequently damaged crops. The pest's ability to survive on wild nightshade species ensures its presence in agricultural landscapes, making control efforts more challenging.
