Californian fungus beetle

Henoticus californicus

Description

The Californian fungus beetle (Henoticus californicus) belongs to the family Cryptophagidae, within the order Coleoptera. This small beetle is primarily known as a stored-product pest that thrives in environments where organic matter is decomposing or affected by fungal growth, making it a significant concern for agricultural warehouses.

It infests various stored goods, including grain seeds, flour, cereals, dried fruits, and processed herbal products. Its presence is frequently linked to high humidity levels within storage facilities, which foster the growth of micro-fungi that serve as a supplementary food source for both the larvae and adult beetles.

The biological cycle follows typical coleopteran development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs near suitable food sources, and larvae consume the substrate, often creating tunnels or eating the germ portion of seeds. In warm, moist environments, reproduction occurs throughout the year, leading to overlapping generations and rapid population growth.

The damage caused by this beetle is largely due to both direct consumption and contamination. While the actual volume of food eaten by a single beetle is small, the presence of larvae, exuviae, and excrement lowers the overall quality and market value of the commodity. Furthermore, they facilitate the spread of fungal spores, accelerating the degradation of the stock.

Effective management and control strategies focus on sanitation and environmental regulation:

  • Maintain low humidity levels (below 14% for grains) to inhibit fungal growth.
  • Ensure thorough cleaning of storage areas to remove dust, debris, and grain residues.
  • Utilize appropriate fumigation techniques for heavily infested commodities.
  • Implement strict inventory rotation and quarantine procedures for incoming stock.
