Toothed fungus beetle

Henoticus serratus

Description

Systematic position: The toothed fungus beetle (Henoticus serratus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cryptophagidae. These beetles are relatively small and are often found in environments where fungal growth occurs, serving as both their food source and habitat.

Crops and affected objects: This species primarily acts as a secondary pest in storage facilities, warehouses, and domestic pantries. It infests cereals, seeds, dried fruits, and any organic materials that have become damp enough to support the growth of molds, which the beetles feed upon.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in areas with high organic content. The development of larvae is highly dependent on humidity levels; optimal conditions for their reproduction include dark, damp environments with a substantial presence of fungal mycelium.

Nature of damage and pest status: The damage caused by Henoticus serratus is largely qualitative. While they rarely consume the entire bulk of the stored product, their presence causes severe contamination through droppings and molting debris. This decreases the commercial value of the grain and promotes the further spread of mold spores throughout the storage facility.

Control measures: Management of the toothed fungus beetle focuses on environmental modification rather than immediate chemical treatment:

  • Reducing moisture content in stored grains to below 14% to prevent mold growth.
  • Improving air circulation and ventilation within warehouses to keep the environment dry.
  • Conducting deep cleaning of storage areas to remove dust, debris, and residues.
  • Applying certified insecticides or fumigants in instances of heavy infestations where mechanical control is insufficient.
