Herpystis is a genus of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. In agricultural terms, this genus is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant damage to various crops, particularly affecting the vegetative and reproductive tissues during the growing season.

Leguminous crops are the primary hosts for this pest. It is particularly noted for causing damage to soybean fields, where the larvae feed on foliage, young shoots, and occasionally reproductive structures, leading to a direct reduction in both total yield and crop quality.

The life cycle of Herpystis follows the typical development stages of leafrollers: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Adults are generally nocturnal, laying eggs on the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on plant tissues to support their development.

The characteristic sign of an infestation is the webbing of leaves. Caterpillars spin silk to tie leaves together, creating protective shelters. Inside these nests, the pest is shielded from contact insecticides and predators. Heavy feeding leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and, under high population densities, severe defoliation of the crop.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Herpystis. Monitoring using pheromone traps is crucial for detecting the initial moth flight. Once economic thresholds are reached, the application of systemic or contact insecticides is recommended. Additionally, cultural practices such as crop rotation and the removal of alternative host weeds are vital for reducing pest pressure.
