Description
Systematic position. The Heyden's longhorn beetle (Hesperophanes heydeni) belongs to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. These beetles are highly specialized wood-boring insects that play a significant role in the degradation of wood tissue in various plant species.
Host plants. This pest primarily infests deciduous trees, including fruit orchards and ornamental plantings. It is known to target stressed or damaged trees, often utilizing fissures in the bark to initiate the colonization process during the summer months.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Hesperophanes heydeni is primarily endophytic, meaning it occurs deep within the host plant's structure. Larvae hatch from eggs deposited on the bark and burrow into the xylem, where they spend the majority of their development feeding, which can extend over several years depending on environmental conditions.
