Silky longhorn beetle

The silky longhorn beetle (Hesperophanes sericeus) is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae and subfamily Cerambycinae. This wood-boring insect is recognized as a significant pest in various regions, particularly where it infests the wood of deciduous trees and woody plants.

This pest primarily attacks weakened or stressed broad-leaved trees. While it can infest a variety of woody species, fruit-bearing trees in orchards and ornamental trees in urban landscapes are particularly susceptible to larval infestations, which can lead to significant structural damage.

The biological cycle of the beetle is characterized by a larval stage that develops entirely within the wood. The duration of the life cycle is often extended and depends on environmental conditions, such as temperature and the moisture content of the timber. Pupation typically occurs within the wood, followed by the emergence of adults through distinct exit holes.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe as they tunnel through the sapwood and heartwood, disrupting the vascular system of the host plant. This interference prevents the tree from transporting water and nutrients effectively, leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.
