Heterakis gallinarum

Heterakis gallinarum is a species of parasitic nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Heterakidae. This parasite is a significant concern in poultry management, as it inhabits the caeca of chickens, turkeys, and other gallinaceous birds. While it does not attack plants, its presence in soil and bedding is a critical management issue for agricultural operations focused on poultry production.

The host range is primarily limited to avian species. The parasite causes heterakidosis, but its most severe role is acting as a biological vector for Histomonas meleagridis, the protozoan responsible for blackhead disease. This disease causes necrotic lesions in the caeca and liver, leading to high mortality rates in turkeys and significant losses in mixed-poultry agricultural environments.

The life cycle is direct and robust. Eggs are shed in the bird's droppings and develop into infective larvae in the environment within approximately two weeks, depending on temperature and humidity. These eggs are notoriously hardy, surviving in soil for years. Earthworms serve as paratenic hosts, ingesting the eggs and maintaining the parasite's presence in the soil even in the absence of birds, which complicates land-based control efforts.

The impact of infection includes weight loss, reduced egg production, and generalized poor health of the flock. Damage occurs as the nematodes attach to the caecal mucosa, inducing inflammation and localized tissue trauma. Because the parasite is highly resistant to environmental stressors, infestations can persist in free-range systems where soil contamination is difficult to eliminate completely.

Effective control measures include:

• Implementing rigorous anthelmintic treatment programs for poultry flocks.
• Practicing high standards of sanitation to prevent accumulation of feces in feeding areas.
• Rotating grazing areas to reduce the concentration of infective eggs in the soil.
• Removing topsoil or turning the earth in high-use outdoor pens to expose larvae to ultraviolet light and desiccation.
