Description

It is important to clarify that Toxocara is not a plant pest. It is a genus of parasitic roundworms that infect carnivorous animals. In agronomy, this object is recognized strictly as a biological soil contaminant that poses a significant public health risk to farm workers and consumers.

Systematic position: Phylum Nematoda, Class Secernentea, Order Ascaridida, Family Toxocaridae. Unlike phytoparasitic nematodes, Toxocara species do not feed on plant tissues, nor do they inhabit or damage the root systems of crops. Their presence in the field is entirely independent of plant health or crop production cycles.

The biology and lifecycle of Toxocara are external to plants. Eggs are deposited in the soil through animal feces. These eggs are extremely resilient, capable of surviving in the soil for years under various moisture and temperature conditions. They do not develop within the plant, but they can adhere to the surface of crops, particularly those close to the ground, via rain splash or dust.

There is no economic damage to crops caused by this organism, as it is not a plant pathogen. The primary concern is the contamination of produce, especially leafy greens, root vegetables, and strawberries. If consumed raw or unwashed, the contaminated soil particles attached to the crop can transfer the parasite to humans.

Control measures are centered on soil hygiene and sanitation. Standard practices for a safe farm include:

  • preventing domestic and stray animals from entering production fields;
  • practicing proper composting of manure to ensure high-temperature destruction of eggs;
  • regular soil monitoring;
  • thorough washing of all produce before packing or consumption;
  • ensuring that irrigation water sources are not contaminated by animal runoff.
