The saddled prominent (Heterocampa guttivitta) is a moth belonging to the Notodontidae family. It is a well-known forest defoliator capable of causing widespread canopy loss in deciduous forests. Outbreaks of this species occur periodically, often leading to significant ecological and economic consequences for hardwood timber production.
This pest has a strong preference for a variety of hardwood tree species. The most commonly attacked hosts include beech, sugar maple, oak, birch, and basswood. In high-density outbreak years, the caterpillars exhibit a generalist feeding behavior, extending their damage to various other hardwood species present in the forest understory or canopy.
The life cycle typically spans one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa in the soil or leaf litter. Adult moths emerge in late spring or early summer to mate and lay eggs on the underside of host leaves. The larval stage, which is the primary period of feeding and damage, lasts through mid-to-late summer.

Early-stage larvae perform skeletonizing of the foliage, while later-stage larvae consume entire leaves, leaving only the midribs and main veins intact.
