Description
The variable oakleaf caterpillar (Heterocampa manteo) is a species of moth within the Notodontidae family, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. This insect is a significant defoliator of hardwood forests, particularly in North America, where periodic outbreaks can cause extensive foliage loss over large areas of woodland.
The primary hosts for this pest include various species of oak, such as white oak and red oak. However, the larvae are known to be polyphagous to some extent and can also feed on the foliage of other deciduous trees including linden, elm, birch, beech, and occasionally fruit trees like apple when their preferred hosts are scarce.
The biological development of this species involves a single generation per year. Adults emerge during the summer months, and females deposit eggs individually on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through five instars, feeding voraciously throughout the summer and early autumn before descending into the soil litter to overwinter as pupae.
The damage caused by the variable oakleaf caterpillar is primarily due to its feeding habits. Early instars typically skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume the entire leaf blade, leaving only the midrib and major veins. Severe infestations result in significant canopy thinning, which reduces tree vigor and makes the trees susceptible to secondary pathogens and borers.
