Heteronychus sinopis is a detrimental soil-borne pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is primarily known for its destructive impact on root systems, causing significant economic losses in various agricultural regions, particularly in tropical and subtropical environments.
The pest primarily targets cereal crops, with maize, wheat, and sorghum being the most vulnerable. It also poses a severe threat to sugarcane plantations. The primary damage is caused by both adults and larvae feeding on the underground portions of the plant, which often results in the immediate death of seedling-stage plants and significant stand reduction.
The life cycle of Heteronychus sinopis is intrinsically linked to the soil ecosystem. Adults are nocturnal, showing high mobility and a strong attraction to light sources during mating flights. Females deposit eggs in moist, organic-rich soil, where the larvae undergo several developmental stages, continuously feeding on plant roots before reaching the pupal stage.
