Heterotylenchus is a genus of parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Allantonematidae. These microscopic roundworms are primarily known as endoparasites that utilize various insect hosts to complete their complex life cycles, playing a dual role in agroecosystems.
These nematodes affect a wide range of arthropods, particularly flies and beetles. While they do not directly feed on plant tissues, they exert significant influence over agricultural environments by regulating the population dynamics of insects that act as herbivores or pollinators for various agricultural crops.
The biology and developmental cycle of Heterotylenchus are deeply intertwined with their hosts. Inside the insect, the nematodes feed on hemolymph and internal tissues. This parasitic interaction often results in the sterilization of the host, preventing reproduction and eventually leading to the death of the insect, which serves as a natural mechanism of population control.
