Description

Prothallonema hastatum is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Anguinidae family. It is a microscopic roundworm that acts as an obligate endoparasite, colonizing the stems, leaves, and buds of strawberry plants and several other ornamental or vegetable crops.

The host range of this nematode is specific but economically damaging. Strawberries are the primary target, where the parasite disrupts cellular metabolism. The pest is frequently spread over long distances through infested nursery stock, which underscores the importance of stringent quarantine measures at the source of propagation.

The life cycle of P. hastatum is tightly linked to the phenology of the host plant. The larvae migrate through the moist films between plant tissues, feeding on the cytoplasm of parenchymal cells. They possess the ability to enter a cryptobiotic state, allowing them to survive extreme environmental stress for prolonged periods.

The damage caused by these nematodes is characterized by stunted growth, leaf crinkling, petiole shortening, and overall chlorotic appearance. In severe cases, the plant's architecture is completely distorted, which prevents the proper development of fruits and leads to total yield loss in infested patches.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is paramount, involving the removal of infected plants and debris to prevent soil contamination. Rotation with non-host crops is advised for at least 2-3 years. Chemical control with specialized nematicides is limited and must be applied strictly in accordance with regional agricultural regulations.
