Sphaerularia bombi is a specialized species of nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Sphaerulariidae. Unlike traditional plant pests that feed on foliage or roots, this organism acts as an obligate parasite of bumblebees (genus Bombus). In agricultural terms, it is considered an indirect pest that threatens crop yields by decimating populations of essential insect pollinators.
The life cycle of this parasite is intricately linked to the life cycle of the bumblebee queen. Infection occurs when a queen encounters the parasite in the soil or on flowers. Once inside the host, the female nematode undergoes a dramatic morphological change, with its reproductive tract everting and growing to an enormous size, eventually filling the entire abdomen of the queen and drawing nutrients directly from the host's hemolymph.
The primary damage caused by Sphaerularia bombi is the sterilization of queen bees. Parasitized queens become incapable of initiating new colonies, which leads to a significant decline in bumblebee density within an agricultural area. Since bumblebees are vital for the pollination of crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and various berries, a reduction in their population results in lower fruit set and yield losses.
Recognizing the presence of the parasite is challenging in a field setting. However, it should be suspected when there is a sudden collapse of bumblebee nests or a noticeable decline in visitation rates of flowering crops during the spring season. Because the nematode persists in the soil, areas with high infestation rates may experience chronic pollination deficits over several years.
Effective management strategies focus on prevention and biosecurity. Agricultural businesses that import bumblebee hives for greenhouse pollination must ensure that all colonies are certified and tested to be free of nematode infections. Promoting environmental health and reducing the indiscriminate use of insecticides also helps keep native bumblebee populations robust enough to withstand and limit the impact of such parasites.
