Systematic position: Histiostoma belongs to the family Acaridae (commonly known as storage or flour mites) within the order Sarcoptiformes. These microscopic mites are typically soil-dwelling saprophages, but they frequently become problematic pests in commercial environments where high humidity and organic matter create ideal conditions for their rapid proliferation.

Host plants and crops: The primary victims of Histiostoma infestation are cultivated mushrooms, including button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) and oyster mushrooms. Additionally, these mites can infest the bulbs, tubers, and roots of various vegetables during storage or in damp greenhouse environments where rotting plant material is present.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is rapid and includes egg, larval, protonymph, deutonymph (hypopus), tritonymph, and adult stages. The deutonymph stage, known as the hypopus, is a specialized phoretic form adapted for survival in harsh conditions and hitchhiking on insects to reach new food sources. Optimal development occurs at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C with high relative humidity.

Damage and economic impact: Mites cause significant damage by feeding on the mycelium of mushrooms, which effectively halts or reduces fruit body production. On plants, they aggravate rot by feeding on tissues and creating entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens. Infestations lead to severe economic losses due to decreased yield quality and quantity.

Control measures: Management of Histiostoma focuses on rigorous hygiene and environmental control:

  • ensuring proper substrate pasteurization to eliminate existing mites;
  • maintaining good ventilation to avoid localized humidity hotspots;
  • prompt removal and disposal of infested crop debris;
  • regular inspection of cultivation rooms for early signs of outbreaks;
  • targeted application of appropriate miticides when mechanical control is insufficient.
