Histiostoma feroniarum is a microscopic mite belonging to the family Acaridae, order Sarcoptiformes. It is recognized globally as a significant pest in mushroom production, frequently infesting commercial facilities dedicated to growing button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms.

The primary hosts of this mite are commercial fungal crops. They cause damage by feeding on the mycelium, which disrupts the vegetative growth phase. When the population density reaches a threshold, the mites severely impair the health of the mushroom beds, leading to stunted growth or total crop failure.

The biology of Histiostoma feroniarum is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are standard for mushroom houses. The mite exhibits a hypopus stage—a non-feeding dispersal phase—which allows it to attach to flies, tools, or clothing, facilitating its migration throughout the growing facility.

Damage to the final product includes surface pitting and deep lesions on the caps and stalks of the mushrooms. These damaged areas often become sites for secondary bacterial infections, resulting in rapid decay, disfigurement, and a significant loss in the market value of the harvested produce.
