Description

Histiostoma laboratorium is a species of microscopic mites belonging to the family Histiostomidae within the order Sarcoptiformes. In agronomic practice, this species is often classified as a facultative parasite or saprophage, capable of causing significant damage to crops, particularly in greenhouse environments, when mass reproduction occurs.

This pest affects a wide range of crops, including vegetables and ornamental plants in greenhouses, as well as mushroom cultures such as oysters and button mushrooms. It is frequently found on decaying organic matter, from where it can migrate to weakened living plant tissues, triggering the development of secondary bacterial and fungal infections.

The biology of the mite is closely linked to high humidity and the presence of decomposing organic material. The life cycle includes the hypopus stage — a specialized form resistant to adverse conditions, capable of attaching to insect vectors for dispersal to new substrates. Reproduction occurs rapidly at optimal temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.

The nature of damage manifests as necrosis, spotting, and the degradation of plant tissues. The pest often penetrates existing lesions, expanding the areas of decay. In addition to direct mechanical damage, Histiostoma laboratorium acts as an active vector for phytopathogens, which significantly increases the mite's harmfulness in intensive greenhouse farming operations.

Control measures involve a comprehensive approach:

  • Maintaining a strict phytosanitary regime and facility disinfection.
  • Managing optimal humidity levels and substrate aeration.
  • Timely removal and disposal of infected plant debris.
  • Application of selective acaricides and biological agents during periods of peak population activity.
