Description

The sunflower moth (Homoeosoma nebulellum) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting sunflower production globally, causing significant yield losses and reducing the overall oil quality of the seeds.

The primary host plant is the cultivated sunflower. However, the pest is also known to thrive on various wild species of the Helianthus genus and other weeds like thistles, which serve as alternative food sources and reservoirs for the pest population.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larvae overwinter in soil cocoons. In the spring, they pupate, and adult moths emerge during the sunflower blooming period, seeking out developing flower heads to lay their eggs.

Damage is caused by the larval stage. Initially, the larvae feed on pollen and floral parts. As they grow, they bore into the seeds, consuming the kernels and weaving silk webbing across the surface of the flower head. This damage leads to empty or partially eaten seeds and creates entry points for fungal infections like head rot.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Planting resistant sunflower hybrids that possess a thick phytomelanin (armored) layer in the seed hull.
  • Implementing proper crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
  • Deep autumn tillage to bury and destroy overwintering larvae in the soil.
  • Strategic chemical control using insecticides, applied when moth flight reaches the threshold level during flowering.
