The host range of the tea tortrix is extensive. While it primarily targets tea plantations, where it feeds on tender leaves and shoots, it also affects a wide variety of fruit trees, such as citrus, apple, peach, and various ornamental shrubs. This broad host preference allows the species to persist in an area even when one type of host crop is temporarily unavailable.

The biology of the moth follows a typical transformation cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit egg masses on the adaxial surface of leaves. After hatching, the larvae immediately begin spinning webs to roll or tie leaves together. This protective behavior makes the larval stage particularly challenging to target with contact insecticides.

The damage caused by Homona menciana is characterized by the rolling of leaves, which are then skeletonized by the larvae. By consuming the leaf parenchyma, the larvae reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields. In tea cultivation, the damage to the apical buds and young leaves directly affects the quality and volume of the harvested flush.
