Fruit tree tortrix

Homona nubiferana, commonly known as the fruit tree tortrix, is a moth belonging to the family Tortricidae in the order Lepidoptera. This insect is a significant pest in temperate fruit orchards, where its larvae are capable of causing substantial damage to both foliage and developing fruits.

The host range of this pest primarily includes Rosaceae species. It is most commonly found on apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. In some instances, it may also infest ornamental shrubs or other deciduous trees, which can serve as reservoirs for the pest population to re-enter commercial orchards.

The life cycle involves typical complete metamorphosis. The larvae generally overwinter in a quiescent state, protected by silk webs within bark crevices or other sheltered parts of the tree. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding on buds, progress to leaves as they expand, and eventually move to fruit as the season advances through one or two generations per year.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which roll leaves and bind them with silk threads to create protective chambers. From these shelters, they skeletonize foliage and, more destructively, bore into fruit. These feeding holes cause direct yield loss and allow secondary pathogens to invade, leading to premature fruit drop and significant decay.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
