Description

The Pointed conehead (Homorocoryphus nitidulus, currently often classified as Ruspolia nitidula) belongs to the Orthoptera order and the Tettigoniidae family. This insect is characterized by its elongated, slender body and a distinctive cone-shaped head, which provides excellent camouflage within dense grasses and crop fields.

This pest is commonly found in humid habitats and is known to inhabit fields of rice, millet, sorghum, corn, and various cereals. The insects are most active during the late summer, coinciding with the grain filling stage of the host crops, during which adult specimens feed heavily on the developing plant tissues.

The lifecycle of the species involves an egg stage, which typically overwinters in the soil or plant debris, followed by several nymphal instars. As nymphs mature, they develop wings and become highly mobile adults capable of migrating across large agricultural landscapes, which often leads to rapid re-infestation of treated fields.

The economic damage caused by the Pointed conehead involves direct feeding on the panicles and grains of cereal crops. By consuming the developing seeds, they significantly reduce grain yield and quality. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can result in substantial financial losses for farmers, particularly in regions where the environment supports high population densities.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies include the removal of grassy weeds along field edges, which serve as primary reservoirs for the population. Furthermore, regular monitoring using light traps or nocturnal inspections is recommended. Chemical control using insecticides is effective when applied during the peak of nymphal development, provided that the population exceeds the established economic damage threshold.
