Description
Systematic position. The Ficus psyllid (Homotoma ficus) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Homotomidae. It is a specialized sap-sucking insect primarily associated with plants of the Ficus genus, often posing a significant challenge for greenhouse and indoor plant management.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is Ficus benjamina. While it rarely attacks other plants, its infestation on ficus varieties can be devastating, especially in interior landscapes where rapid multiplication occurs due to stable temperatures and lack of natural predators.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The nymphs are the most destructive, often seen covered in white, waxy secretions on the underside of leaves. Adults are small, winged insects capable of jumping, which facilitates their spread across the greenhouse.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. Feeding by nymphs and adults drains vital fluids, leading to leaf curling, yellowing, and stunted growth. A major issue is the production of profuse honeydew, which attracts sooty mold fungus, turning the leaves black and severely hindering the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for eradication.
