Description

The Camphor psyllid (Mesohomotoma camphorae) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This pest is specifically known for its detrimental impact on camphor trees, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to plants in urban and botanical settings.

The primary host for this insect is the Camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora). It predominantly colonizes the tender foliage and young shoots, where it feeds on nutrient-rich plant fluids. When infestations are heavy, the cumulative feeding effect can significantly stress the tree, leading to reduced growth and overall poor health.

The biological cycle of the Camphor psyllid involves metamorphosis through several nymphal instars before reaching adulthood. Throughout these stages, the insects are highly active and gregarious. Their lifecycle is synchronized with the flush of new growth on the host tree, ensuring a constant food supply for the developing nymphs.

Damage caused by the psyllid is twofold: direct feeding damage and secondary complications. Feeding causes curling, chlorosis, and potential necrosis of the leaves. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, interferes with photosynthesis, and makes the plant look unsightly.
