Description
Mesohomotoma is a genus of jumping plant lice within the family Psyllidae. These insects are known as significant sap-sucking pests that primarily target plants within the Malvaceae family, often causing extensive damage to commercial and home garden ornamental crops.
The primary host for species like Mesohomotoma hibisci is the hibiscus. These insects infest the tender shoots and leaf undersides, drawing essential nutrients from the plant. Without proper management, heavy infestations can lead to significant stunting and the eventual decline of the plant's health.
The life cycle begins with eggs deposited on the host plant, followed by several nymphal stages. As the nymphs develop, they feed continuously on plant phloem. The speed of the life cycle is heavily dependent on ambient temperatures, allowing these pests to proliferate rapidly in greenhouse environments or warm climates.
Damage symptoms include leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and overall stunted growth. Furthermore, the nymphs secrete honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus covers the leaf surface, blocking sunlight and hindering the photosynthesis process, which can severely weaken the plant.
Effective control strategies require a combination of monitoring and intervention. Chemical control involves the use of systemic insecticides to reach the nymphs protected by their secretions. Additionally, physical removal of infested foliage and the introduction of biological predators like ladybirds can help suppress populations without heavy reliance on chemicals.
