Horistonotus

Horistonotus is a genus of insects belonging to the family Elateridae (click beetles), within the order Coleoptera. These insects are commonly referred to as "sand wireworms" due to their strong preference for coarse-textured, sandy soils. They are significant soil-dwelling pests that pose a substantial threat to agricultural productivity in specific climatic and edaphic conditions.

The host range of Horistonotus is quite extensive, affecting major agronomic crops. Economic losses are frequently reported in corn, cotton, peanuts, sorghum, and various vegetable crops. The larvae attack the subterranean parts of the plants, causing severe damage to seeds, roots, and underground stems, often resulting in devastating stand loss during the early seedling stage.

The biology of Horistonotus is characterized by a multi-stage life cycle involving eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The larval stage is the most damaging and can persist in the soil for an extended period. Larval behavior is highly adaptive, with individuals moving vertically through the soil profile to find optimal moisture levels or temperatures suitable for feeding and development.

The damage caused by these pests is often underestimated until visual symptoms of crop decline appear. Because they consume the underground structures, plants exhibit wilting, chlorosis, and eventual death. Infested fields typically show stunted growth and irregular patches of missing plants, leading to reduced yield potential and, in severe cases, the necessity for replanting the affected area.
