The sand wireworm (Horistonotus uhlerii) is a destructive soil-dwelling pest belonging to the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. As its common name suggests, it is primarily a problem in light, sandy soils where the larvae thrive and develop within the rhizosphere of various agricultural crops.

This pest has a wide host range, attacking crops such as maize, peanuts, cotton, soybeans, and several vegetable species. The most significant damage occurs at the seedling stage when larvae feed on the underground stems and roots, frequently leading to stand loss and reduced crop vigor.

The biological cycle of Horistonotus uhlerii involves eggs laid in the soil, which hatch into larvae known as wireworms. These larvae undergo multiple molts over a period that can extend beyond a year. They are highly mobile within the soil profile, moving vertically in response to changes in temperature and moisture levels.
