Description

The Columbia silkmoth (Hyalophora columbia) is a member of the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. While often appreciated for its size and aesthetic value, its larvae are recognized as occasional pests of specific coniferous trees in North American silviculture and garden settings.

The primary host for this species is the American larch (Larix laricina). While they typically exist at low population densities, occasional outbreaks in nursery environments can lead to significant defoliation, particularly impacting the health and vigor of young, sensitive saplings.

The life cycle of the Columbia silkmoth involves one generation per year. Adult moths emerge in early summer to mate and lay eggs on host foliage. The larvae progress through five instars, feeding voraciously throughout the season. By autumn, the caterpillars construct durable, parchment-like cocoons attached to twigs, where they overwinter as pupae.

Damage is characterized by extensive needle loss caused by larval feeding. When infestations occur, the defoliation of branches severely restricts the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to weakened structures and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, such as fungal pathogens or bark beetle attacks.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest control. Mechanical removal of cocoons during the dormant season is highly effective in smaller nursery plots. In instances of high larval populations, the application of biological control agents, specifically products based on Bacillus thuringiensis, offers a targeted approach that minimizes harm to non-target insect species.
