The red ceanothus moth (Hyalophora rubra) is a species of moth belonging to the family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths). While often appreciated for its size and aesthetic, it can act as a pest when larvae populations reach high densities, potentially impacting the foliage of various host trees and shrubbery in both wild and cultivated landscapes.

The host plants for this species primarily include various deciduous trees and shrubs, such as species of Ceanothus, willow, birch, and alder. The larvae are voracious defoliators, and during outbreaks, they can strip branches of their foliage, which impacts the health of the host plant by reducing its ability to undergo photosynthesis effectively.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The pupal stage is particularly resilient, as the moth spins a durable, silk-like cocoon that attaches firmly to the host plant or nearby structures. This pupation strategy allows the species to survive harsh winter conditions and emerge in the spring as adults.

Damage to host plants is characterized by significant leaf tissue loss. When larvae are in their final instars, their feeding activity increases exponentially. Repeated defoliation over consecutive seasons can weaken the tree, making it susceptible to secondary stressors such as wood-boring insects, fungal infections, or severe drought conditions.

Pest management should be proactive and focused on monitoring. In managed landscapes, removing cocoons during the dormant season is an effective mechanical control method. If infestation levels exceed economic thresholds, biological control agents or targeted insecticides that minimize harm to beneficial pollinators are recommended to preserve the overall ecosystem balance.
