The great silver water beetle (Hydrophilus piceus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Hydrophilidae. It is recognized as one of the largest aquatic beetles found in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater ecosystems. While adult beetles primarily consume decaying plant matter and algae, their larval stage is strictly carnivorous, which is a concern for specific agricultural and aquaculture sectors.
The primary economic impact of this species occurs in fish farming ponds and hatcheries. The larvae are voracious predators that target small aquatic organisms, including fish fry. For commercial fish farmers, an infestation of these larvae can significantly decrease the population of young fish, leading to substantial production losses and hindering the overall productivity of the aquatic ecosystem.
The life cycle of the beetle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females construct silk-like cocoons, which are often attached to floating or submerged aquatic vegetation. After hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding heavily before migrating to the moist soil on the pond banks to pupate and eventually emerge as adults.

In aquaculture, the presence of these larvae leads to a decline in stock health and density. Furthermore, their presence in irrigation canals or agricultural water supply systems can lead to clogging and disruption of small-scale water management if they occur in extremely high populations.
