The Great silver water beetle (Hydrophilus piceus) is a large aquatic beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Hydrophilidae. While it is naturally occurring in freshwater ponds and marshes, it is frequently encountered in irrigation canals and flooded rice fields, where its feeding habits may interfere with agricultural productivity.
This beetle is primarily known for its impact on young rice crops. Adult beetles are predominantly phytophagous, feeding on aquatic vegetation and occasionally on the tender shoots of young rice plants. This feeding activity can result in crop thinning, leading to reduced stand density and potential economic losses for rice growers.
