The Great silver water beetle (Hydrous piceus) is a prominent member of the order Coleoptera and the family Hydrophilidae. Recognized as one of the largest aquatic beetles, it inhabits stagnant or slow-moving freshwater bodies rich in vegetation, which serves as both its habitat and food source.
From an agronomic and aquaculture perspective, this species can act as a pest. Adults and larvae are known to feed on the submerged parts of aquatic plants, potentially causing significant damage in nurseries or ornamental ponds. Their feeding behavior results in structural degradation of the plants, which can hinder their growth and overall vitality.
The biology of Hydrous piceus involves a complete metamorphosis. Females construct specialized waterproof cocoons to protect their eggs, usually attaching them to aquatic plant leaves. The larvae are voracious predators, equipped with powerful mandibles capable of consuming plant tissue or small aquatic invertebrates, which makes them highly adaptable to various environmental conditions.
The primary damage caused by these beetles includes ragged leaf edges and destruction of young shoots. In aquaculture settings, their presence is particularly concerning because larvae can also prey on fish fry or compete for resources, leading to decreased survival rates of young fish and weakened vegetation stands.
