Description
The Bedstraw hawk-moth (Hyles gallii) is a prominent species within the Sphingidae family, part of the order Lepidoptera. This moth is widespread across the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. Adult moths are strong fliers with a wingspan reaching up to 80 mm, characterized by an olive-brown coloration with a distinct white streak along their wings.
The primary food plants for the larvae include species from the Rubiaceae family, specifically bedstraw (Galium), as well as willowherb (Epilobium), spurge, and occasionally grapevines. The larvae are large and visually striking, often displaying eye-spots on their bodies, which is a defensive adaptation against avian and insect predators.
The life cycle typically consists of one generation per year, although warmer climates may support a second. Adult moths are active from June through August. Females deposit eggs individually on the host plant leaves. After hatching, the larvae undergo five instars of development, feeding voraciously on the foliage before descending into the soil or plant litter to pupate and overwinter.
Damage caused by this pest is primarily foliage consumption. The larvae feed aggressively, and a heavy infestation can result in significant defoliation of the host plant. This damage compromises the plant's ability to photosynthesize, leading to reduced vigor, stunted growth, and in some cases, severe stress to young horticultural crops or viticulture plantings.
Effective management strategies focus on both cultural and chemical control measures. Cultural practices, such as removing weeds like bedstraw from the vicinity of crops and tilling the soil in autumn, are highly effective in destroying pupae. In cases of severe economic threat, targeted application of biological pesticides or chemical insecticides during the early larval stages provides efficient control.
