Hylesia is a genus of moths belonging to the Saturniidae family. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various regions of Central and South America. The larvae of this genus are characterized not only by their voracious appetite for foliage but also by their urticating hairs, which pose a direct health hazard to humans and domestic livestock during mass outbreaks.

Taxonomically, the genus is classified under the order Lepidoptera. Its representatives are known for their high adaptability and reproductive capacity. As polyphagous insects, they do not restrict their diet to a single plant species, but rather infest a wide range of host plants, including valuable forest species, ornamental plants, and various agricultural crops.
