Hylesia nigricans

Systematic position: Hylesia nigricans is a species of moth belonging to the family Saturniidae, order Lepidoptera. Beyond its agricultural significance, this species is medically relevant because both the adults and larvae possess urticating (venomous) hairs that can cause severe skin irritation and respiratory distress in humans upon contact.

Host plants: This pest is a polyphagous defoliator. The larvae of Hylesia nigricans feed on the foliage of a wide variety of tree and shrub species. Within its native range, it is known to cause significant economic damage to orchards, forestry plantations, and ornamental trees by consuming leaves and leading to massive defoliation.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit large clusters of eggs on leaves or bark. Upon hatching, the larvae exhibit gregarious behavior, living and moving in colonies, which allows them to efficiently strip foliage from their host plants and migrate systematically to fresh branches.

Character of damage and impact: The primary impact is the intensive consumption of leaf tissue. During population outbreaks, larvae can completely defoliate host trees, which reduces photosynthesis, stunts growth, decreases fruit yield, and can result in tree mortality if the infestation persists over several seasons. The presence of venomous hairs also complicates manual agricultural management and harvesting operations.

Control measures: Management strategies require a combination of monitoring and intervention techniques:

• Manual removal and destruction of larval nests before they disperse.
• Application of biological insecticides, such as formulations based on Bacillus thuringiensis.
• Targeted use of systemic or contact insecticides during high-density population spikes.
• Promotion of natural biological control through the conservation of predators and parasitoids that target Saturniid larvae.
