Description
The olive bark beetle (Hylesinus vestitus) is a member of the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a significant pest affecting olive plantations, capable of causing serious physiological decline in host trees through its burrowing activity.
This beetle primarily attacks the Olea europaea species. The insects prefer to infest healthy branches and stems of varying ages, though they are particularly attracted to trees that are already suffering from environmental stress or poor orchard management.
The biological cycle consists of distinct stages including eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Mating typically occurs after the beetles emerge from their wintering sites. Females bore tunnels into the bark to deposit eggs, and the resulting larvae tunnel extensively, disrupting the plant's vascular system.
Visible damage includes wilting of foliage, branch dieback, and the presence of small, circular exit holes on the bark surface. If left unmanaged, the cumulative effect of these larval galleries leads to the loss of limb structural integrity and a substantial reduction in olive fruit yield.
