House longhorn beetle

Systematic position. The house longhorn beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive wood-boring pests, capable of causing significant structural damage to seasoned softwood timbers used in construction.

Host materials. This pest primarily infests coniferous timbers, particularly pine, spruce, and fir. In terms of agricultural and infrastructure protection, it poses a severe threat to structural timber, roofing beams, floor joists, and wooden framework in buildings, as well as untreated timber stacks stored for extended periods.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this beetle is highly variable, ranging from two to ten years depending on the nutritional quality of the wood and environmental conditions. Adult females lay eggs into existing cracks. Upon hatching, larvae burrow deep into the sapwood, creating extensive galleries packed with frass (wood dust and excrement) as they feed.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage, which consumes the internal structure of the wood while leaving the outer surface intact until late-stage infestation. By the time surface holes become visible, the timber integrity is often critically compromised.

Protection measures. Effective control involves both preventive and curative strategies. Prevention relies on using pressure-treated timber that is resistant to wood-boring insects. If an infestation occurs, professional interventions are required, such as injecting liquid insecticides directly into larval galleries or professional fumigation services to ensure complete eradication throughout the affected wooden elements.
