Description

Hypocryphalus is a genus of bark beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are significant wood-boring pests that primarily affect trees and shrubs. Due to their small size and cryptic habits, they often go unnoticed until the damage to the host plant becomes visible and systemic.

The host range of Hypocryphalus includes various fruit trees such as mango, fig, and citrus, as well as several forest species. While they frequently infest stressed or weakened trees that are suffering from drought or poor soil conditions, high population densities allow them to successfully attack even healthy specimens, eventually leading to tree decline.

The biology of these beetles involves an endophytous life cycle. The adults bore into the bark, constructing galleries where the female oviposits. The larvae hatch and tunnel through the cambium and xylem layers. Because the entire development occurs inside the wood, the pest is shielded from many environmental factors and standard contact insecticides.

Damage caused by Hypocryphalus is characterized by the interruption of the plant's vascular system. Symptoms include branch dieback, yellowing foliage, fruit drop, and visible boring holes accompanied by sap exudation. Over time, the structural integrity of the branch or trunk is compromised, and secondary infections by fungi or bacteria often enter through the holes made by the beetles.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:

  • Sanitary pruning of infested limbs and immediate disposal of wood by burning.
  • Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation.
  • Using systemic insecticides that move through the tree's sap to reach the boring larvae.
  • Monitoring with lures to detect the arrival of adult beetles.

Early detection remains the most critical factor in successful management. Gardeners and foresters are advised to monitor the bark for small exit holes and signs of sawdust (frass) during the growing season. By integrating biological, chemical, and cultural controls, it is possible to mitigate the economic impact of this destructive wood-boring pest.
