Hypogastrura manubrialis is a species of Collembola (springtails) belonging to the family Hypogastruridae. These minute hexapods are commonly found in damp soil environments, particularly where organic matter is abundant. While typically decomposers, they can become pests in horticultural settings when conditions are ideal for rapid population growth.

This pest primarily targets young plant seedlings, germinating seeds, and the root systems of ornamental plants and vegetables. Greenhouse environments are particularly susceptible to infestations, as the constant humidity and warmth favor the life cycle of these small soil-dwelling organisms.

The biology of Hypogastrura manubrialis is heavily dependent on moisture levels. Their lifecycle consists of several moulting stages, and they are capable of explosive reproduction in stable, wet conditions. This feeding activity impairs the plant's nutrient uptake, leads to stunted growth, and can result in the total collapse of seedlings. Furthermore, the lesions created by their feeding often serve as entry points for secondary pathogens and fungal infections.

Management strategies focus on cultural control as the primary line of defense. Key measures include:

  • Maintaining proper soil moisture by avoiding over-irrigation.
  • Ensuring adequate ventilation and drainage in greenhouse benches.
  • Promoting faster drying of the soil surface to make it inhospitable to springtails.
  • Using sterile growing media to prevent the introduction of the pest from raw organic matter.
