Purple springtail
Hypogastrura purpurascens
Description
Systematic position: The purple springtail (Hypogastrura purpurascens) is a member of the order Collembola and the family Hypogastruridae. These are tiny, primitive hexapods often found in moist soil and decaying organic matter. While typically harmless decomposers, they can become significant pests under specific greenhouse conditions.
Host plants and injury: This pest primarily affects vegetable seedlings, potted flowers, and succulent plants grown in greenhouses. When the soil remains excessively moist, springtails may switch their diet to living plant tissues. They feed on delicate root hairs, germinating seeds, and the base of stems, often resulting in stunted growth or total plant collapse.
Biology and life cycle: Hypogastrura purpurascens thrives in high-humidity environments. They reproduce rapidly, laying eggs in moist soil or organic debris. Due to their lack of a pupal stage, their populations can explode in a short period if the microclimate remains favorable. They are highly dependent on water-saturated substrates to prevent desiccation.
Economic impact: The primary damage caused by these pests is the destruction of the root system, which disrupts nutrient and water uptake. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, leading to damping-off disease. This results in poor establishment of crops and substantial financial losses for nurseries and greenhouse growers.
Protection measures: To minimize the risk of infestation, implement the following strategies:
- Regulate irrigation to ensure proper soil drainage and prevent surface water stagnation.
- Use sterilized or pasteurized potting media to eliminate initial pest populations.
- Maintain good sanitation by removing decaying organic debris from plant benches and floors.
- Apply soil-drench insecticides or biological control agents if monitoring confirms high pest densities.
