Description

Systematic position: The genus Hypopta belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Cossidae (carpenter moths). These insects are recognized as specialized wood-boring pests, as their larval stage is entirely dedicated to developing within the woody tissues of their host plants.

Host plants and damage: These pests primarily target deciduous trees, grapevines, and various ornamental species. The larvae tunnel through the wood, disrupting the vascular system of the plant. This structural damage causes wilting, branch dieback, and in cases of heavy infestation, the total death of the host plant.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle typically extends over one to three years. Female moths lay their eggs in crevices of the bark or near the roots. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the plant tissue, where they remain protected from external predators while feeding on the inner layers of the wood until reaching maturity.

Host impact and harm: Due to their cryptic behavior, damage is often not visible until the plant has been significantly compromised. The presence of wood-boring larvae makes the tree susceptible to secondary opportunistic pathogens and fungal diseases. Economic damage is particularly severe in nurseries and intensive fruit orchards where plant health is critical.

Protection measures: Managing Hypopta populations requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Regular field scouting to detect entry holes or frass at the base of trees.
  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local population density.
  • Application of systemic insecticides specifically timed to the hatching period of young larvae.
  • Enhancing plant vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to help trees heal from minor boring damage.
