The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus heterolepis) is a member of the Coleoptera order, specifically within the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized as a highly destructive agricultural pest that poses a significant threat to global coffee production by infesting the fruit of the coffee plant.
This beetle primarily targets the berries of Coffea species. The pest is adapted to locate mature and developing fruit through chemical cues, which allows it to successfully colonize plantations, often leading to severe infestations if not monitored correctly by agronomists.
The biology of this species is unique as the entire life cycle, including mating and larval development, occurs inside the coffee berry. The adult female bores a hole into the fruit, creating galleries where she deposits her eggs. This protected environment ensures high survival rates for the offspring, complicating pest control efforts.
The extent of damage is substantial, as the feeding larvae destroy the endosperm of the coffee bean. This feeding process causes premature fruit drop, weight loss of the harvest, and makes the remaining beans vulnerable to secondary fungal pathogens, drastically reducing the market value of the crop.
