Description
Hypsipyla is a genus of moths belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. These insects are notorious pests that specifically target the shoots and fruits of high-value timber trees, posing a significant economic threat to forestry and agroforestry systems in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
The most devastating species include Hypsipyla robusta and Hypsipyla grandella. These pests primarily infest trees belonging to the Meliaceae family, which includes commercially valuable species such as mahogany and cedar, as well as various other fruit and forest tree species that are essential for local and international timber markets.
The life cycle of Hypsipyla follows a typical holometabolous development, passing through the stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs on young shoots, buds, or fruits. Once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the plant tissue, where they develop and feed, often remaining protected from external environmental factors.
The damage caused by these insects is severe: the larvae tunnel through the central pith of shoots, causing the death of the terminal leader. This damage forces the tree to produce lateral branches, leading to stunted growth, stem deformation, and significantly reduced timber quality, making the trees unsuitable for high-value wood production.
Effective control measures include a multidisciplinary strategy: the application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis, the use of pheromone traps for population monitoring, and integrated silvicultural practices. Planting in mixed-stand configurations and selecting resistant genotypes are also crucial strategies to mitigate infestation and damage.
