Description
Systematic position: The Mahogany shoot borer (Hypsipyla grandella) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is widely recognized as the most destructive pest of Meliaceae species, causing significant economic losses in silviculture and forest plantations across the American tropics.
Host plants: The pest primarily attacks trees belonging to the Meliaceae family, with Swietenia (mahogany) and Cedrela (cedar) being the most susceptible. Its ability to infest high-value timber species makes it a limiting factor for the reforestation and sustainable management of these forests.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moth is nocturnal, laying eggs on the terminal shoots and buds of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the pith of the stem, creating tunnels that protect them from predators and harsh environmental conditions until they pupate.
Nature of damage and pest status: The larval stage is the most damaging phase. By feeding inside the terminal shoot, the larvae kill the apical meristem, which forces the tree to produce lateral branches. This results in crooked stems, stunted growth, and a loss of apical dominance, rendering the timber less valuable or entirely useless for high-quality wood production.
Control measures: Managing Hypsipyla grandella is challenging due to the larvae's protected feeding site. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are recommended:
- Silvicultural practices: using mixed-species plantations to reduce host density.
- Biological control: utilizing parasitoids like Trichogramma spp. or microbial agents.
- Physical methods: pruning infested shoots to remove larvae before they emerge.
