Mahogany shoot borer

Hypsipyla robusta

Description

Systematic position: The Mahogany shoot borer (Hypsipyla robusta) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting timber tree species within the Meliaceae family, significantly impacting forestry operations globally.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets trees in the Meliaceae family, including economically vital species such as Cedrela odorata (Spanish cedar), Swietenia macrophylla (Big-leaf mahogany), and various species of Toona and Khaya. These plants are the primary sources of high-quality hardwood, and their infestation results in major economic losses.

Biology and life cycle: Hypsipyla robusta undergoes a complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs on buds, young leaves, or developing shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tissue, creating tunnels within the stems. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels, allowing for overlapping generations in tropical climates.

Damage and pest status: The primary injury occurs when larvae bore into the terminal shoots, leading to shoot death and dieback. This destruction of the main stem forces the tree to develop lateral branches, resulting in stunted growth and crooked stems that lack timber value. Furthermore, infestation of inflorescences and fruits significantly reduces seed viability and natural regeneration capacity.

Control measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated approach to maintain tree health and timber quality:

  • Regular monitoring of plantations to identify and remove infested shoots.
  • Sanitary pruning to reduce larval populations within the canopy.
  • Application of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis or insect-pathogenic fungi.
  • Utilization of pheromone traps for both monitoring and mass trapping of male moths.
  • Implementation of agroforestry practices that mix host trees with non-host species to disrupt pest establishment.
