Illeis

Illeis is a genus of ladybeetles (Coccinellidae) within the order Coleoptera. Unlike most predatory ladybirds, these beetles are specialized mycophagous insects that primarily feed on spores and mycelia of powdery mildew fungi. Their unique dietary habits often place them in proximity to diseased plants, requiring careful assessment of their ecological impact.

These insects are frequently observed on various host plants including grapes, roses, and cucurbits. Because they prefer environments where powdery mildew is prevalent, they are often found in gardens, orchards, and vineyards. Their presence serves as a bio-indicator of fungal infestation, although they are not exclusively beneficial if they begin to damage plant tissue.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on foliage infested with fungi, ensuring that newly hatched larvae have an immediate food source. The larval stage is particularly active, moving across leaf surfaces to graze on fungal growth, with the entire cycle duration varying according to ambient humidity and temperature levels.

In such cases, the beetles may start feeding on the plant epidermis, leading to leaf distortion, chlorosis, and reduced photosynthetic capacity. This secondary feeding behavior turns them from harmless observers of fungi into pests that compromise plant vitality.
